Medicare GLP-1 prescriptions may cost $50 for eligible beneficiaries through the temporary Medicare GLP-1 Bridge from July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027. The program applies to certain GLP-1 drugs for weight reduction, requires prior authorization, and works outside normal Medicare Part D payment rules.

Medicare GLP-1 prescriptions for $50 are coming through a temporary program, but the clock starts ticking the day it begins.

Have questions about GLP-1 and your Medicare Part D plan? Speak with a licensed agent, and we’ll help you compare plans based on your prescriptions, doctors, pharmacies, and budget.CMS says eligible Medicare beneficiaries may get certain GLP-1 medications for weight reduction through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge from July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027. After that, the program is scheduled to end unless CMS changes the timeline.

This matters because many people on Medicare have been watching the cost and coverage rules around weight loss drugs closely. Standard drug coverage has limits, and this new program works outside the usual Part D payment system.

The $50 copay does not count toward your Part D true out-of-pocket costs.

At Marketplace Insurance Advisors, we help individuals and couples compare Medicare options based on their health care needs and budget. We are a full-service health insurance, life, and supplemental insurance agency based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Our licensed agents serve South Florida and help people get coverage in 21 states across the country.

What Is The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program?

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a short-term CMS demonstration program.

It gives eligible beneficiaries access to certain GLP-1 medications used to reduce excess body weight and maintain weight reduction. CMS says the program starts July 1, 2026, and runs through December 31, 2027.

The program is not the same as regular Medicare Part D coverage.

CMS says the Bridge operates outside the normal Part D benefit coverage and payment flow. A single central processor will manage prior authorization, claims, and pharmacy payments for the program.

That means this is not as simple as checking your plan’s usual formulary and assuming the drug will process the same way at the pharmacy.

How Long Will The $50 GLP-1 Program Last?

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge starts on July 1, 2026, and runs through December 31, 2027. That gives eligible beneficiaries about 18 months of access under the current program terms.

CMS also says the $50 copay stays the same regardless of the phase of the Part D benefit you are in when you fill the prescription. The agency also notes that no part of the $50 copay counts toward your Part D true out-of-pocket costs. (cms.gov)

So yes, the $50 price point is real for people who qualify. But it is not permanent based on current CMS guidance.

Who May Qualify For The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge?

Not every Medicare beneficiary will qualify.

CMS says beneficiaries must meet prior authorization criteria and must be enrolled in an eligible drug plan. This can include a standalone prescription drug plan or certain Medicare Advantage plans with prescription drug coverage.

A provider must submit a prior authorization request and prescription for an eligible GLP-1 drug.

CMS lists clinical criteria that include:

  • Use for weight reduction and maintaining weight reduction
  • Current and ongoing lifestyle changes, including structured nutrition and physical activity
  • Age 18 or older
  • BMI of 35 or higher at the start of GLP-1 therapy, or
  • BMI of 30 or higher at the start of therapy with certain listed conditions, such as heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, uncontrolled hypertension, or chronic kidney disease stage 3a or above

This is why you should not assume approval.

Your doctor’s documentation matters. Your plan type matters. The requested drug and use matter.

Which GLP-1 Medications Are Included?

CMS currently lists these eligible products for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge when used to reduce excess body weight and maintain weight reduction:

  • Foundayo®
  • Wegovy® injection and tablets
  • Zepbound® KwikPen®

CMS also says the single-dose vial and single-dose pen versions of Zepbound® are not included in the Bridge. The agency notes that the product and NDC list may change during the program.

That last point matters.

Drug lists can change. Coverage rules can change. Prior authorization details can change. Review your options before making decisions based on headlines alone.

How GLP-1 Coverage Usually Works Under Medicare

Some GLP-1 medications may already qualify for coverage when prescribed for certain FDA-approved uses.

Examples can include Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular risk reduction, or obstructive sleep apnea tied to a covered indication. But drugs used only for weight reduction have faced standard coverage limits.

The Bridge creates a separate path for certain weight loss drugs under specific CMS rules.

Medicare.gov says Medicare Part D helps pay for brand-name and generic drugs and is offered by private companies approved by Medicare. It is optional, but people who wait too long to enroll may face a late enrollment penalty later.

That makes Part D plan review a key step, even with the Bridge in place.

Why Your Part D Plan Still Matters

The Bridge does not replace the need for smart plan selection. Your drug plan can still affect your other prescriptions, pharmacy options, premiums, formulary rules, copays, coinsurance, and ability to add or change coverage during valid enrollment windows.

At Marketplace Insurance Advisors, we help you compare Medicare plan options with your full medication list in mind. Some Medicare Advantage plans include drug coverage, while standalone plans can work with Original Medicare. Our team helps you compare the practical details before you enroll.

We can also help you understand how prescription drug coverage fits with Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and supplemental coverage. Original Medicare does not cover most prescription drugs taken at home, which is one reason many people add drug coverage.

What To Do Before July 2026

Do not wait until the program opens to start asking questions.

Before July 1, 2026, take these steps:

  1. Review your prescriptions. Make a full list of all medications, doses, and pharmacies.
  2. Talk with your doctor. Ask if your condition, BMI history, and treatment plan may fit CMS criteria.
  3. Keep records. BMI at therapy start, diagnoses, and prior treatment details may matter.
  4. Review your plan type. Make sure you understand your current drug coverage.
  5. Ask for help before deadlines. Plan changes must follow Medicare enrollment rules.

If you plan to change Medicare coverage, timing matters. The right review can help you avoid surprises with prescriptions, doctors, pharmacies, and total costs.
